Global Warming: Massive Ice Methane and More Noted by Ed Ward, MD 2-26-07; Maximum Sea Level Rise Updated 2013
A few recent articles on the ‘discovery’ of decade old data on ‘massive methane’ http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/07/24/release-of-arctic-methane-could-speed-ice-melting-and-cost-60-trillion/ embedded in the ice caps and glaciers, a 6 year old warning quote comes to mind:

Also noted in the above article, “Complete melting of all natural ice on the planet will result in 200 to 300 feet of sea level rise based on previous occurrences.” The quote was based on the information in those articles. Let’s check as unbiased as we can get, ‘geographic history,’ ourselves for as little as a 100 Million years ago, out of a 5 Billion year planetary history.
Based on fossil evidence, there are two periods of Maximum sea level rise and they are MASSIVE. The Ordovician, 500 Million years ago, with several massive fluctuations and the Cretaceous with a similar history. History indicates startling facts that sea levels may have another 600 to 700 feet rise in a total planetary ice melt.
“During the Early and Late Ordovician epochs, almost all of North America was submerged under these epicontinental seas.
Sea level fluctuated continuously throughout the Ordovician. At the broadest scale, sea level was highest during the Early and Late Ordovician epochs and may have been up to 200 metres (about 660 feet) lower during the Middle Ordovician Epoch. Numerous shorter-term fluctuations were superimposed on this broad rise and fall, with each fluctuation typically lasting one to five million years. Additional minor fluctuations of a few metres or less, occurring on the order of tens to hundreds of thousands of years, have also been identified. The causes of all of these changes in sea level are difficult to identify. Some may have been driven by variations in the rates of plate motion, some by glaciation, some by local tectonic uplift or subsidence, and some by changes in groundwater storage capacity. “Sea level was higher during most of the Cretaceous than at any other time in Earth history, and it was a major factor influencing the paleogeography of the period. In general, world oceans were about 100 to 200 metres (330 to 660 feet) higher in the Early Cretaceous and roughly 200 to 250 metres (660 to 820 feet) higher in the Late Cretaceous than at present. The high Cretaceous sea level is thought to have been primarily the result of water in the ocean basins being displaced by the enlargement of midoceanic ridges.
As a result of higher sea levels during the Late Cretaceous, marine waters inundated the continents, creating relatively shallow epicontinental seas in North America, South America, Europe, Russia, Africa, and Australia. In addition, all continents shrank somewhat as their margins flooded. At its maximum, land covered only about 18 percent of the Earth’s surface, compared with approximately 28 percent today. At times, Arctic waters were connected to the Tethys seaway through the middle of North America and the central portion of Russia. On several occasions during the Cretaceous, marine animals living in the South Atlantic had a seaway for migration to Tethys via what is presently Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Libya. So, the good news is at worst the world’s lowlands are only 700 feet from the beach. The bad news is that it’s 700 feet straight up.

Surly this would be part of the explanation of the sudden rise of Carbon dioxide following the start of the interglacials, which were triggered by the Milankovitch cycle. A sudden outpouring of methane would have accelerated the melt and with a relatively short half life of about 7 years, the methane would have shown up in ice bubbles in the remaining ice sheets as Carbon dioxide. The fact that the top 70 or so meters of a forming ice sheet is still exchanging gas with the atmosphere would added to this effect (seeing Carbon dioxide even though methane was released).

Indeed there are several studies that show there is a tremendous exponential increase in melting during the last 10 years of complete meltings of ice caps. The expected culprit would be the release of methane (breaks into CO2 and H2O), and CO2 trapped in the ice caps. (as well as a general increase in humidity of atmosphere?).
